2022 STAR Student & STAR Teacher!
We are so excited to announce that Madeline Pitre has been named STAR Student for the 2021-2022 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council (MEC) M. B. Swayze Foundation, sponsor of the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program. Established by the Mississippi Economic Council in 1965, the purpose of the STAR program is to recognize outstanding students & teachers in Mississippi through its Education Celebration. The STAR Student is selected based on academic excellence. Both American College Test Scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school’s STAR Student.
Madeline has chosen Dr. Burkett as her STAR teacher. This is the 4th time Dr. Burkett has been selected as the STAR teacher.
Madeline scored a perfect 36 on the ACT. She is a National Merit Finalist, National AP Distinctive Scholar, member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, and Tri- M Honor Society. Madeline is the President of the Campus Service Council, a Drum Major in the BHS Marching Band and plays clarinet and piano in the Wind Ensemble. She is a member of the Varsity Tennis Team, the Varsity Cross Country Team (Girl’s Captain) and Varsity Track Team. She is an officer in the Student Council, Spanish Club, and Beta Club. She is a member of the Key Club, AP Psychology Club, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is on the MS State Superintendent of Education’s Student Advisory Board. Madeline works at the local, state, and national level as an Anti-Tobacco/Anti-Vaping Advocate. She is a Harrison County Tobacco Free Coalition Youth Advocate and serves on the CVS Catch My Breath National Youth Advisory Board. She was awarded the AmeriCorps President’s Silver Young Adult Volunteer Service Award. Madeline is the daughter of David and Dr. Laurie Pitre.
