2019 STAR Student & Teacher!
Congratulations to Mitchell Pegoda & Dr. Michael Burkett!
Mitchell Pegoda has been chosen as BHS's STAR Student and Mitchell has chosen Michael Burkett as his STAR Teacher. The STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) program is facilitated through the Mississippi Economic Council and emphasizes scholastic excellence as well as recognition of excellence in the teaching profession. This is the third time Dr. Burkett has been chosen as a STAR Teacher.
Mitchell is active in varsity soccer, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He believes that keeping things simple with only a couple extracurricular activities allowed him to achieve a higher level of commitment and focus in these areas. He lettered his freshman year in soccer, received midfielder of the year his junior year and the Coach’s Award his senior year. Mitchell was awarded a spot on the All District Region 8 soccer team as well as selected to the Mississippi Association of Coach’s All-Star game, in which he won the William Winter Student Athlete Award. He was a member of NHS his junior year and voted President his senior year. Mitchell is a member of the 2019 BHS Hall of Fame and plans to attend Mississippi State University to study engineering and math.
Mitchell named Michael Burkett as his STAR Teacher. Dr. Burkett had this to say about Mitchell, “Mitchell is a model of a student-athlete and is a leader by example for his fellow students. He excels in the classroom and on the field through his hard work and perseverance. His studies have lead him to be one of my top students for the past two years. I look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes as he moves on from Biloxi High, but I will miss getting to teach him.”
Mitchell has taken Physics from Dr. Burkett and is currently taking AP Physics from him. He says “I feel that his class is important – I enjoy the subject and his class. He engages his students and I know that his instruction will prepare me for the course of study I’ve chosen.”
