Welcome to a wonderful year. Please check your child's red folder and planner everyday. Most of my communications will be sent by those two items. We have homework every night except Friday. Homework is an extension of what your child is doing in the classroom, if your child is not doing homework then you are putting them at a disadvantage!!!

Grading Scale

A=90-100  B=80-89  C=75-79  D=70-74  F=below 70  I=incomplete

Grading follows the policies of Biloxi Public Schools.  A mid-term progress report and a report card following the end of each term are issued.  The student’s current grades are available via Internet IOD. (http://iiod.ssts.com/Home.asp?state=MS)

 

 

 

MATH

 

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

 

1 Understand and represent relationships among numbers and compute

operations (addition and subtraction) with and without manipulatives.

a1 Recognize and write numbers 0 to 50.

h Identify the value of coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).

2 Recognize, extend, and create patterns.

a Use a pattern rule to translate and recognize patterns from one pattern representation to

another.

d1 Introduce counting by different units when given a group of objects using 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and

10’s.

4 Identify and apply measurable attributes.

d1 Tell time to the hour intervals using both digital and analog clocks.

5 Collect, organize, and interpret data in graphical form.

b Analyze and interpret data by using mathematical language such as more than, less than,

etc.

 

 

Assessments: Math tests will be given at the end of each unit.

 

Homework/Assignments/Projects: Math homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.

 

Course Requirements: Students must participate in and complete all classroom activities and assignments given during class and for homework.

 

Reteaching and Retesting:  Retesting/Reteaching will be during  a 45 minute remediation period.  Any student who requests to retake a test may do so.  Retest must be completed within 10 days.

 

Additional Comments: Test folders on Tuesday.


 

 


 

ENGLISH

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

 

3 The student will express, communicate, or evaluate ideas effectively.

b The student will compose a description of a person, place, or thing.

b1 Compose drawings/visual images and orally describe.

4 The student will apply Standard English to communicate.

b The student will use Standard English mechanics.

b1a Begin to use appropriate end punctuation (e.g., period).

b3 Begin to use commas (e.g., dates).

b5 Begin to use colon in notation of time.

b6 Begin to use capitalization (e.g., first word in a sentence, proper nouns, days of the week,

months of the year, the pronoun “I”). Introduced in Term 1, Tested in Term 4.

b8a Develop handwriting skills. Position paper in order to write in a left to right progression

moving from top to bottom on the page. Write first and last name legibly.

c The student will use varied sentence structures.

c1a Analyze sentences to determine purpose (e.g., declarative/telling).

c2 Compose sentences with a variety of purposes (e.g., declarative/telling).

c3 Compose simple sentences.

    

 

Assessments: A weekly spelling test, writing test and English Mechanics test will be given.

 

Homework/Assignments/Projects: English homework will be given Monday through Thursday.

 

Course Requirements: Students must participate in and complete all classroon activities and assignments given during class and for homework.

READING

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

1 The student will use word recognition and vocabulary (word meaning)

skills to communicate.

a The student will apply knowledge of concepts about print.

a1 Point to words in text when reading aloud, matching spoken words to print.

a2 Distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters.

b The student will apply knowledge of phonological and phonemic awareness.

b4 Identify orally beginning, final, and medial sounds in one syllable words (e.g., /ch/ in chat,

/sh/ in wish, /e/ in read).

b8 Add or delete a phoneme to change a spoken word (e.g., Add /b/ to “at” = bat or take /k/

from “cat"=at).

c The student will use word recognition skills

c1 Generate the sounds from all the letters and letter patterns (including consonant blends,

consonant digraphs, short and long vowel patterns), and blend those sounds into

recognizable words.

f The student will develop and apply knowledge of words and word meanings to

communicate.

f1 Identify and sort pictures and words into basic categories.

2 The student will apply strategies and skills to comprehend, respond to, interpret, or

SCIENCE

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

1 Understand how to plan and carry out a simple scientific investigation.

a Demonstrate an understanding of a simple investigation by asking appropriate questions

about objects, organisms, and events. (DOK 2)

b Compare, sort, and group objects according to their attributes. (DOK 2)

c Use simple tools (e.g., rulers, scales, hand lenses, thermometers, microscopes) to

gather information. (DOK 1)

c1 Length, using nonstandard units (e.g., paper clips, Unifix cubes, etc.) and standard units

(inches, centimeters)

c2 Weight, using a balance scale with and without nonstandard units

c3 Capacity, using nonstandard units

d Match a simple problem to a technological solution related to the problem (e.g., dull

pencil – sharpener, bright light – sunglasses, hot room – fan, cold head – hat, heavy baby

– stroller). (DOK 1)

e Use diagrams and written and oral expression to describe ideas or data. (DOK 2)

f Predict the results of an investigation if it is repeated. (DOK 2)

2 Develop an understanding of properties of objects and materials, position and motion of objects, and

properties of heat and magnetism.

a Recognize that most things are made of parts. (DOK 1)

b Describe properties and changes of objects and materials. (DOK 1)

b1 Processes of melting and freezing

b2 How water evaporates and disappears into the atmosphere

d Differentiate between interactions of two magnets and the interaction of a magnet with

Assessments:  There will be no formal assessment for science at this time.
