Grading Scale

A=90-100  B=80-89  C=75-79  D=70-74  F=below 70  I=incomplete

Grading follows the policies of Biloxi Public Schools.  A mid-term progress report and a report card following the end of each term are issued.  The student’s current grades are available via Internet IOD. (http://iiod.ssts.com/Home.asp?state=MS)

 

 

 

Reading

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

- The student will use word recognition and vocabulary (word meaning)

skills to communicate.

- The student will apply knowledge of concepts about print.

-Point to words in text when reading aloud, matching spoken words to print.

- Distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters.

- The student will apply knowledge of phonological and phonemic awarenessb4 Identify orally beginning, final, and medial sounds in one syllable words (e.g., /ch/ in chat,

/sh/ in wish, /e/ in read).

- Add or delete a phoneme to change a spoken word (e.g., Add /b/ to “at” = bat or take /k/

from “cat"=at).

- The student will use word recognition skills

- Generate the sounds from all the letters and letter patterns (including consonant blends,

consonant digraphs, short and long vowel patterns), and blend those sounds into

recognizable words.

- The student will develop and apply knowledge of words and word meanings to

communicate.

-Identify and sort pictures and words into basic categories.

- The student will apply strategies and skills to comprehend, respond to, interpret, or

evaluate a variety of texts of increasing length, difficulty, and complexity.

-The student will use text features, parts of a book, text structures, and genres to analyze

text.

- Text features – titles, illustrations, headings, graphs, etc.

-The student will analyze, interpret, compare, or respond to increasingly complex literary

and informational text, citing text-based evidence.

- Interpret text through moving, drawing, speaking, acting, or singing.

- Compose visual images based on text.

-Identify favorite passages..nly Web page or from the MDE site; teacher may choose to include additional objectives; sequence objectives as much as possible to match your term plans

 

Assessments: A comprehension test is given after each story. 

 

Homework/Assignments/Projects: The story for the week should be read at home according to the week's assignments.

 

Course Requirements: The student is required to complete all classroom and homework assignments.

 

Reteaching and Retesting:  A retest will be given for a failing grade and after any test upon parent request.  The parent will be notified in writing. Reteaching will take place and the student will be given the retest when ready.

Language Arts

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

Term 1

 

-The student will express, communicate, or evaluate ideas effectively.

- The student will compose a description of a person, place, or thing.

- Compose drawings/visual images and orally describe.

-The student will apply Standard English to communicate.

- The student will use Standard English mechanics.

- Begin to use appropriate end punctuation (e.g., period).

- Begin to use commas (e.g., dates).

- Begin to use colon in notation of time.

- Begin to use capitalization (e.g., first word in a sentence, proper nouns, days of the week,

months of the year, the pronoun “I”). Introduced in Term 1, Tested in Term 4.

- Develop handwriting skills. Position paper in order to write in a left to right progression

moving from top to bottom on the page. Write first and last name legibly.

- The student will use varied sentence structures.

-Analyze sentences to determine purpose (e.g., declarative/telling).

- Compose sentences with a variety of purposes (e.g., declarative/telling).

- Compose simple sentences.

 

Assessments: spelling tests, creative writing, sentence dictation, grammar,sight words

 

Homework/Assignments/Projects: Study Spelling and sight words nightly

 

Course Requirements: The students are required to complete all class and homework assignments.

 

Reteaching and Retesting:  A student who fails a test will be offered an opportunity for re-teaching and retesting within 10 days by the classroom teacher.  In that instance the teacher will send home a written notice.  Communication will take place between the teacher and the parent as to the re-teaching times and the date of the retest.  The student must attend the re-teaching sessions to be eligible to retest.  The higher grade of the two tests will be placed in the grading program in the computer.

Math

Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

     

 

Assessments: -Recognize and write numbers 0 to 50.

- Identify the value of coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).

 -Use nonstandard units (paper clips, unifix cubes, etc.) to measure length.

 -Tell time to the hour intervals using both digital and analog clocks.

 - Interpret simple bar graphs and pictographs.

 -Analyze and interpret data by using mathematical language such as more than, less than, etc.     

 

Homework/Assignments/Projects: A test will be taken after each completed chapter.

 

Course Requirements: Math homework is assigned nightly as stated on the homework log.
