LANGUAGE ARTS Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.
The student will use an appropriate composing process (e.g., planning, drafting, revising,editing, and publishing/sharing). Planning • Begin to use graphic organizers to generate and organize ideas. Editing • Begin to edit for capitalization and end punctuation in written compositions. Revising • Begin to add details to compositions. Publishing/Sharing • Share compositions with others by displaying and retelling ideas. The student will compose informational text about a familiar topic (e.g., families, animals, etc.). Functional texts (e.g., labels, notes, etc.). The student will use Standard English grammar. Begin to recognize the use of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Begin to recognize the use of articles and conjunctions. The student will use Standard English mechanics. Begin to use developmentally appropriate spelling. Recognize and record some beginning and ending sounds in words. Spell first and last name. Spell some sight words. Develop handwriting skills. Write first and last name legibly The student will apply knowledge of concepts about print. Distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters. The student will apply knowledge of phonological and phonemic awareness. Identify and produce rhyming words in response to an oral prompt (e.g., fat/cat, wig/pig, hid/kid). Recognize some medial sounds in spoken words (e.g., /k/ in cat, /t/ in fat, /o/ in hop). Generate a group of spoken words that begin or end with the same sound (e.g., pig, party, penguin and cat, hot, sit). Blend and segment the onset and rime of spoken one-syllable words (e.g., /h/ + at = hat, big = /b/+ ig). Blend phonemes orally to make a word (e.g., /p/ /a/ /t/ = pat, /b/ /u / /g/ = bug). Segment phonemes orally within a spoken word (e.g., sit = /s/ /i/ /t/, rap = /r/ /a/ /p/). The student will use word recognition skills. Match all consonant and short vowel sounds to the appropriate letters. Understand the alphabetic principle, which means as letters in words change, so do the sounds in the words. Blend letter sounds in one syllable words. Read some words derived from common word families (e.g., -at, -ig, -ot). The student will understand and explain the meaning of common affixes (e.g., un-, re-, - s, -es, -ed, -ing). The student will develop and apply knowledge of words and word meanings to communicate. Begin to recognize word relationships. Identify uppercase letters in random order. Identify lowercase letters in random order. Matches upper and lowercase letters. Identify letter sounds. The student will recognize or generate an appropriate summary or paraphrase the events or ideas in text. Retell a familiar story without the book including a beginning, middle, and end. Retell two to three steps in the sequence of events in text shared with the student.
Assessments: Individual tests will be administered to check for mastery.
Homework/Assignments/Projects: Homework is not required but you can help your child practice letter work each week. It will be given on Monday and can be turned in each Friday. Other work will be sent home as needed.
Course Requirements: Students are required to complete all classwork.
Reteaching and Retesting: Objectives will be retaught and retested as needed.
Additional Comments: Please check red take-home folder each day. There will be important papers and information in them. Please initial each day. |

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.
Develop an understanding that living and non-living things have identifiable characteristics. Compare similarities between parents and offspring. Classify animals as farm, zoo, pet, wild (non-domesticated), or ocean (aquatic) according to appearance and action. Identify animals by habitat (land, air and water). Differentiate among humans, other animals, and plants. Classify objects as living or non-living based on characteristics. Illustrate parts of a plant. Identify major external parts of living organisms (human, insects, and plants). Investigate the different types of observable and measurable characteristics of matter. Classify objects according to color, shape, size, texture, and use. Identify a solid and a liquid. Identify objects that sink or float. Demonstrate the interactions between magnets and objects. Distinguish between warmer and cooler using a thermometer. Demonstrate knowledge of fire safety. Discover how environmental concerns relate to land, water, and air. Identify substances that can be recycled. Determine how environmental hazards can affect organisms living in specific areas. Classify primary land uses (e.g., farming, livestock, fishing, residential, recreation, etc.). State the scarcity of resources in the classroom/home environment (e.g., pencils, paper, etc.). State the opportunity cost of choices made in the home environment (e.g., change, watch television or play outside, etc.). State the division of labor within the classroom/home environment (e.g., making an art project, using an assembly line, classroom and community helpers, etc.). Identify settings of read-aloud stories as geographic locations e.g., Grandfather’s Journey – Japan). Recognize that various cultures utilize different styles of writing (e.g., Japanese alphabet vs. English alphabet). Recognize that countries are different sizes and shapes (e.g., islands of Japan vs. mainland United States).
