Class Overview ~ 8th Grade

In History we take an in-depth look at a variety of past events that shaped our country, and how they have impacted our nation today. I plan to make students more culturally and socially aware of their community and surroundings to produce environmentally enriched learners.

Supplies

Each day your child is expected to come to class with the necessary supplies: a blue or black ink pen, regular lead pencil (no mechanical pencils, please) notebook paper, and his or her History notebook.  Notebooks will not be checked, however, random checks will be conducted for daily grades for materials students are assigned to have in their folders and are responsible for. (Daily questions).

Discipline

My assertive discipline is as follows: warning,  student conference and parent contact, 250 word written essay, 30-minute detention,  and office referral.  If there is a serious offense a student will be moved to step 5 (office referral).

Cheating/Plagiarism

All work must be completed entirely by the individual student. Any assignment turned in that contains the work of another person, either in all or in part, will be given a (I) as a grade and an alternate assignment will have to be completed during the following 3 school  mornings in detention. On the second offense of this infraction, the student will be referred to the office for disciplinary action. Parents will also be contacted.

Late Work/ Make-up work

Assignments will not be accepted late. Anything not turned in on the assigned day will not be accepted and an alternate assignment will have to be completed to receive credit for the assignment. ( In case of absence, assignments should be turned in the day of students return to class). All assignments are located on the calendar and should be reviewed by students and parents.

NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

Make-Up work …. PLEASE REFER TO STUDENT HANDBOOK FOR CURRENT MAKE-UP POLICY ON ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN DURING STUDENTS ABSENCE.

Please note: This policy does not apply to assignments that were assigned when a student was present in class and absent on due date; only for those assignments NOT assigned when student was present.

Grading

In the History department tests are 55% of the grade; projects, quizzes and homework (includes daily work) are 35% of the grade, and the common term assessment (term exam) is10% of the grade.

Homework

Homework consists of the class work your child does not complete in class. Very few, if any occasions will arise when homework is ASSIGNED. Grades may reflect daily/homework in the gradebook, but the students are provided ample time in class to complete all assignments.

Tardies

Each student will be expected to be in class, in their individual seat, before the tardy bell rings. If they are not, please refer to school policy on tardiness to class.

Daily Questions (DQ)Assignment

Each student is required to bring a folder or notebook daily to class for these assignments. These questions are to be copied from the board and  are to be answered immediately upon entering the classroom.  Folders will not be checked, however, random, unannounced, checks will be conducted and students will be required to provide questions and answers from this notebook. Alternate assignments will not be provided for this grade.

Class Participation ~ For Parents

I encourage you to participate in our lessons as much as possible.  You are welcome in our classroom at all times. (PLEASE, Don’t forget to check in through the office first, though!)

Class Participation ~ For Students

When in my class, students are required to be on task from bell to bell.  Being on task not only means completing the work, but also sitting up, staying awake, and contributing relevant information to our lessons.

I am looking very forward to a great year with you and your child!
