The Career Center at Biloxi High

The Career Center is made up of four components:  college material, career exploration and information, military information, and local business information.  The Choices software program is available on the computer, providing students with information they may need about colleges, occupations, and financial aid.  This same information is in book form for student use when a computer is not available.

The Career Center is open 30 minutes before and after school and also during lunch, enabling students to have sufficient accessibility to meet their needs.  Students may use the center during class periods provided that a class is not already scheduled in the Center.

In addition to the career, college, and financial guidance available, the Center also offers studyware, both on the computers and in book form, for the American College Test, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, College Level Examination Placement, and Advanced Placement testing.  The books and all materials located in the Center are available for checkout.

To better assist students, the Career Center handles all Scholastic Aptitude Test and American College Test packages, registration for the Pre-ACT and Pre-SAT tests, class ranks, transcript requests, and ordering of all college admission packages.  The Center handles all scholarship matters, in a convenient and helpful arrangement for students.

The Center has word processing capabilities on computer and also a résumé writer.  Students are allowed to type reports, term papers and résumés for colleges and job applications.  The Center has become a "One Stop Shop" for BHS students, especially seniors.  They no longer have to schedule appointments with guidance counselors for routine paperwork and applications.   The Center also has a bulletin board which posts testing dates, scholarship information, and other materials pertinent to the students.

The Center hosts a Financial Aid Night for parents and students.   This program acquaints parents with the Center and provides vital information concerning finances and colleges.

The business community volunteers time to speak to students during Career Week.  Resource personnel provide factual information on their particular jobs, including educational backgrounds and reasons for choosing a particular field.

Student tutoring assistance is available daily in any academic subject.  Members of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta serve as tutors.  A student needing the tutorial service can register in the Media Center and schedule a time for assistance when his/her schedule permits.

Approximately 1,000 students use the Career Center each month.
