• The food chain starts with the grasses in the salt marsh.  The grass dies and fall into the water. When it falls into the water and sinks to the bottom it becomes "detritis" this is the stinky black mud that makes the bed of the salt marsh. You can see and smell this detritis when the tide is low.
  • The next step is the small animals that nibble the detritis such as grass shrimp or comb jelly fish, these are the jelly fish that glow in the water at night.

  • The 3rd level is the animals that eat shrimp and jellyfish, etc. Things like crabs and fish or birds eat these smaller animals.
  • What kind of animals would eat crabs, fish or birds? This is the next level.
