The following essays were created for a contest from the "Rice Romp" website.

The essays were researched and written by a group of 4th grade students, who happen to be girls. They worked very hard thinking about rice, organizing their rice essay, researching rice, writing about rice, and finally proofreading their rice essay. These girls began to think about rice all the time-that's how they came to be known as-"The Rice Girls!" Hope you enjoy their essays.

Rice Girl #1-Jennifer's Essay

There are many boring and interesting facts about rice believe me. Mississippi rice normally grows in the Delta Region because the soil there is rich, which is great for crops. Rice grows in many other places in America. United States rice is considered to be the finest quality rice available. Americans eat less than thirty percent of the rice we grow. Seventy percent of it has to be shipped off.

Many different countries buy our rice. Brazil, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia buy our rice, but they are not the only ones. We grow too much rice, so we have to sell it to other countries. We buy other countries’ rice, so it is only fair for them to buy ours.

Rice is also very healthy. It has vitamins such as thiamin, niacin, iron and folic acid. It is low in calories and has no fat. Carbohydrates are in rice. It is cholesterol-free and is low in sodium.

At Beauvoir Elementary School, two of my 4th grade friends and I had an interview with the cafeteria. We did a survey with some of the teachers. In the interview with the cafeteria, we found out some interesting facts. We found out that our school cafeteria’s favorite thing to make with rice is gumbo, and that they make 17 pounds of rice with red beans and rice, 17 pounds of rice with gumbo, and 10 pounds of rice with cheesy chicken over rice. In the survey we went to the teachers in grades K-3rd, the school nurse, the vice-principal, and the principal. We surveyed 33 teachers and staff. The choices were: Spanish rice, dirty rice, brown rice, white rice, and parboiled rice. Dirty rice won with 15 votes. Next came white rice with 12 votes. 3rd was Spanish rice with 4, 2nd brown rice with 2, and last was parboiled rice with no votes at all. Both the survey and the interview were very interesting.

There are several different things you can make with rice that I am going to briefly tell you about. Even snack foods are made with rice. These snack foods are Rice-Krispies, Chinese Rice Cakes, and Rice Pudding. Some of the main course foods you make with rice are Cheesy Chicken over Rice, Gumbo, and Spanish Rice. There are many others.

Rice is grown in the month of April. The people who sell rice normally charge $2.50-$6.50 a day. That means that rice is so good that the people who sell rice probably make a nice profit off the rice they sell, and the rice by itself.

I enjoyed learning about rice. I have learned many facts about rice that I want to have it every day. Rice is now my favorite food!

I would like to tell you about rice. Rice grows in the Delta Region of Mississippi. Mississippi is a very unlikely place to grow rice. The people from the Delta Region grow rice because of their rich soil. The Delta Region has been planting rice for 15 years.

Saudi Arabia and South America are some of the places that buy our rice. But Mexico buys our rice the most. I think our rice is delicious. If you think it is good to, than try some. I think Mexico buys our rice because Spanish rice came from Mexico.

Rice is very healthy. It has vitamin thiamin, niacin, icon, and folic acid. It has low- fat, and low calories. I think that anyone who wants to be healthy should start eating rice.

People usually grow rice in the springtime. It is usually grown in long lines. I think growing rice in my community helps everybody because rice is very healthy and rice is very popular and we can make lots of money from rice.

There are many things that you can make with rice. You can make Rice-Krispies, Spanish rice, Rice Pudding, Red Beans and Rice, Cheesy Chicken over rice, and Gumbo. Rice is very versatile.

My fourth grade friends and I took a survey all around the school. It was pretty close, but out of Spanish rice, Dirty Rice, Brown Rice, White Rice, and Parboiled Rice, Dirty Rice won. I thought Spanish rice would win. We also interviewed the cafeteria ladies. They said that the kids love the rice. The cafeteria ladies said " The kids love Cheesy Chicken with Rice."

I think rice is a very good thing to learn about, I did this essay because I wanted to know why rice is so important to our community, now I know that rice is a crop that helps people to earn money and it also helps people to be healthy.
