Homework is valid practice. To ensure academic success, your child needs: 

• an organized and quiet space in which to work problems or study for tests

• a set daily schedule within which homework must be completed
• adults or older siblings who are available to answer questions or provide guidance
• supplies: notebook paper, pencils, eraser, calculator, ruler, compass, protractor, graph paper, note cards
• Student Planner (given to each student at the beginning of the year)

Homework Expectations (may vary occasionally):

Monday through Thursday, students can expect homework practice to be assigned. This practice will be taken from their textbook, workbook, or practice sheets.

There is a homework chart posted in the classroom. The daily homework assignments will be posted, and students will be given time to enter the assignments into their planner. The planner is to travel from home to school every day. Please check the planner daily and make sure your child completes the assignments.

Each student is required to maintain a pocket folder for homework. The folder is to be used to transport activity sheets and work products to and from school. It should be supplied with blank notebook paper at all times.

Each student will be given a math journal (spiral notebook). On some occasions, homework is to be done in the journal. All class work will be done in the journal. Students are expected to carry the journal to and from school so you can refer to the work in the journal when your child has questions about homework. You will be able to see the process we used in the classroom to solve the problems.

Math journals are expected to be kept neatly. Students will be instructed on those expectations.

You can help by:

• answering questions or providing guidance
• choosing a schedule that works best for your child. Some children work best if they complete their homework assignments as soon as they get home from school. Other students work best if they are allowed some play or down time before they do their homework.
• ensuring a quiet atmosphere for study - no student is capable of fully concentrating if the television is "talking" or if there is a lot of noise and confusion surrounding them when they try to complete their assignments or to study for a test.
• occasionally listening to your child explain assignments and/or read AR books aloud; this makes you aware of any problems your child may be having with mathematics comprehension or reading fluency
• asking your child to explain what he/she is doing on their assignment
• asking your child questions or creating sample problems before a test
• writing a note to me (or calling) if you think your child is having problems understanding the assignments, or if your child needs help with a particular concept
• checking the Student Planner to make sure your child has completed all assignments and/or studied for tests
• being aware of your child's school schedule (check the planner and this website and read notes in the Wednesday folder)
• signing the AR log every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening; also sign if your child reads "extra" minutes on weeknights or on weekends
