Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader Program is a research based reading program that provides time for independent practice. Students are expected to read at least 15 minutes at home every school night and are encouraged to read on weekends. I am developing an awards program to give students added incentive to read.

When students read, they are to log in the date, length of time, and number of pages. Logs are kept in an AR folder that is expected to be at school every day and taken home every school night. Parents are expected to initial the logs for at-home reading sessions. The logs will be checked and initialed by me every day.

Each student's reading range is individualized. The range is set based upon results of a STAR test given at the beginning of the school year and past AR reading records, if available. Students are expected to have an average percent correct of 90% or higher at all times. Ranges will be adjusted up or down, dependent on scores on AR tests.

You will receive a Student Record Report with each midterm progress report. The student record indicates number of tests taken, points earned, average percent correct and average book level. Students should strive to meet their points goals and to maintain a 90% or above average percent correct. The average book level is just one indicator of your child's reading fluency. An average book level between 4.8 and 5.5 for the first semester would be optimal.

If a student reaches all goals prior to the end of any term, he/she may choose not to read at home until the next term begins. To receive the AR Pass, students must have earned the total points, have at least 90% correct on tests taken, and they must be reading on grade level.

At the beginning of each term, I will meet with your child to discuss the previous term's record, and we will create new goals. Your child's reading range and goals are recorded in their AR folder.

You can help your child become successful, not only in the AR program, but in every other subject area, by encouraging him/her to read as often as possible. Because they are able to choose their own reading materials within their range, encourage them to select books that are interesting to them.

You can find a list of AR quizzes with reading levels on the Beauvoir Elementary website.
