Objectives: This is a general overview of what the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.

1 The student will use word recognition and vocabulary (word meaning) skills to

communicate.

2. The student will apply knowledge of roots and affixes to infer meaning of unfamiliar words

3. The student will develop and apply expansive knowledge of words and word meanings to

communicate.

4. The student will apply knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms

5 The student will use context clues to infer the meanings of unfamiliar words or phrases)

6 The student will apply knowledge of reference materials (e.g., dictionary, glossary

7 The student will analyze and evaluate vocabulary usage

8 The student will apply strategies and skills to comprehend, respond to, interpret,.

9 The student will apply knowledge of text features, parts of a book, text structures,

10 Parts of a book - title page, table of contents, glossary, index, appendix, footnotes,

11 The student will respond to, interpret, compare, contrast, critique, or evaluate increasingly

complex literary text, literary nonfiction, and informational text citing text-based evidence.

12 Story Elements (e.g., setting, characters, character traits, plot, resolution, point of view)

13 The student will express, communicate, evaluate, or exchange ideas effectively.

14 The student will use and reflect on an appropriate composing process (e.g., planning,

drafting, revising, editing, publishing) to express, communicate, evaluate, or exchange

ideas with a focus on texts of increasing complexity and length.

15 The student will apply Standard English to communicate in composing or editing using

 Nouns, Adjectives, Pronouns etc.

16 The student will apply Standard English mechanics to compose or edit including punctuation and spelling.Commas

Avoid sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and comma splices.

 

Tests and Grades

 

Grading:  A=90-100  B=80-89  C=75-79  D=70-74  F=below 70  I=incomplete

Grading follows the policies of Biloxi Public Schools.  A mid-term progress report and a report card following the end of each term are issued.  The student’s current grades are available via Internet IOD. (http://iiod.ssts.com/Home.asp?state=MS)

 

Tests: Tests will occur weekly

      

Retesting:  Retesting may occur if the student is willing to meet after school for tutoring and retesting in the problem area.

 

Homework/Assignments/Projects: Homework will be assigned on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students will be assigned a special project each terms with guidelines and deadlines to follow. 

 

Course Requirements: This class will involve group interaction and oral reading. Failure to participate in these activities will affect the daily grade.
