Lopez Elementary is named for seafood industry pioneer Lazaro Lopez,  who donated land for the school. The original Lopez Elementary was located on Howard Avenue and opened in 1924. West End Elementary (today’s Lopez Elementary) opened in 1952, with a construction cost of $190,000.
