Biloxi schools to offer guidance for parents, students
1/11/2010

Rob Miller, a consultant who presented messages to students, parents and teachers in Biloxi Public Schools in 2009, will return on Wednesday with helpful advice for dealing with day-to-day challenges in schools.

Daytime sessions for high school students and their parents will be conducted at Biloxi High School and an evening session for all parents and students will be conducted at Biloxi Junior High School.

Miller’s free presentations will cover three topics: parents and students accepting responsibility for behavior and grades; bullying; and respect for each other, teachers, and administrators, including the concept that respect must be earned.

The first 25 minutes of each session will be open to students and parents, followed by a 10-minute session exclusively for parents.

Times of the daytime sessions at Biloxi High School:

--- Seniors and their parents: 9:55 to 10:35 a.m.

--- Freshmen and their parents: 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

--- Sophomores and their parents: 12:40 to 1:20 p.m.

--- Juniors and their parents: 1:35 to 2:15 p.m.

A session open to all parents and students will be conducted that night, at 6:30 p.m., in the auditorium at Biloxi Junior High School.

Miller, a Michigan high school and college athlete who went on to become a successful coach and administrator on the high school and collegiate levels, conducted sessions in March and August designed to help Biloxi parents and students enjoy healthy participation in team sports.

News and notes

Cookbooks: The Biloxi cheerleaders have only 60 of their Biloxi High School Tailgating Cookbooks left, and connoisseurs should get 'em while their still hot because no reprints are planned. To order one -- $10 each -- email Jayne Robinson by clicking here.

H1N1 follow-up: Biloxi Public Schools will be offering follow-up H1NI vaccinations to those students who received vaccinations several weeks ago. Parents with questions should email nurse Jalena Taylor by clicking here.

Late bus: Biloxi Junior High School is now offering a 3:45 p.m. bus in an effort to allow more students to take advantage of the district's re-teaching and re-testing policy. The bus will transport any student who wishes to stay after school for additional academic opportunities. One catch: Students must return a signed permission form by 10 a.m. the day before riding the late bus.

Board certified: Newly National Board Certified teachers in the Biloxi Public Schools are Slajounya Johnson-Gates (North Bay), Lisa Bouvette (Beauvoir), Sherri Treigle (Jeff Davis), James Gentry (Biloxi High) and Tracy Filippi (Michel).
