School board to discuss re-purposing issue
2/16/2009

The Biloxi School Board is expected to address the issue of "re-purposing" one of three Biloxi elementary schools during its meeting on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the DuKate Building on Father Ryan Avenue.

The board had directed Superintendent Dr. Paul A. Tisdale to determine the impact of re-purposing either Beauvoir, Lopez or Gorenflo Elementary schools.

Tisdale had earlier suggested transferring Gorenflo students to other schools, but board members wanted to consider several options before making a decision.

The board is seeking to cut costs in light of a student enrollment that is 20 percent off its pre-Katrina figure and word from the Mississippi Department of Education that recent cuts of more than $700,000 are only a preface for additional state funding cuts planned for next school year.

Among the other issues on the agenda Tuesday: recognition of Romeena Hill, the district's teacher of the year, who will be nominated for State Teacher of the Year; a report on school board member recognition week; and a status report on the high school expansion.
