High school library named for longtime educator Zan Skelton
10/24/2011

Dozens of education and community leaders, retired and current teachers, and former students gathered this afternoon at Biloxi High School for the dedication of the Zan Lee Skelton Library Media Center.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Tom Burnham, state Superintendent of Education; Dr. Olon Ray, a former Biloxi school superintendent; and current Biloxi schools chief, Arthur McMillan.

Skelton, former English teacher and former chair of the English Department at Biloxi High School, taught at Biloxi High School from 1953 to 1986. He still proofreads and edits district material in his retirement, and he has written a voluminous history of Biloxi Public Schools.

"I think it was a wonderful tribute to an outstanding Biloxi educator," said Biloxi Principal Pamela Manners, who emceed the ceremony. "I think what made it even more meaningful was the coming together of old friends, peers, students and co-workers to show their appreciation for Zan and his talent."

Skelton, meantime, was gracious in his remarks, reciting "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and thanking those in attendance.

Said he: "Thank you for this honor. Thank you for making it a wonderful and matchless high point in my long and – in countless ways – richly rewarding life."
