Indians open region play with D'Iberville this evening
9/23/2011

Athletic leaders are hoping for a huge crowd this evening at the Biloxi High School campus when the Indians football squad hosts the season's first regional contest, against the undefeated D'Iberville Warriors.

Biloxi has a 2-2 record while D'Iberville is 4-0. Kickoff for the Region 4-6A contest is at 7:30 p.m.

Among the Biloxi players to watch, as reported in today's Sun Herald are Biloxi QB Jaylen Woullard, who has thrown for 685 yards and 10 TDs, and run for 192; and RB Devoriae Martin, who has rushed for 450 yards. Nick Lucas leads Indians in tackles with 45 and Cody Brown has two interceptions. On the D'Iberville squad, RB Justin Brister paces the Warrior offense with 498 rushing yards and seven TDs, while QB Garrett Landrum has passed for 279 yards and two TDs. LB Tyler Schankin leads the Warrior defense with 37 total tackles. Marcellus Henderson, Scoby Bender and Elijah Wilson each have two interceptions.

Doug Barber, the longtime prep writer at the Sun Herald and a Biloxi High alumnus, gives the edge to the home-standing Indians, 24-20, owing to Biloxi's receiving corps and Martin-led running attack.

'North Bay Night Out' is coming up

North Bay Elementary School, the city's latest National Blue Ribbon School, will hold its annual "North Bay Night Out" on Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school.

The event, which has attracted as many as a thousand North Bay parents and students in the past years, will be held "rain or shine," according to Principal Laurie Pitre and members of the sponsoring North Bay PTA.

Free cheeseburgers, hamburgers, chips, drinks and popcorn will be served.

Also invited to the event this year will be current sixth and seventh grade students, whose test scores last year helped North Bay earn the National Blue Ribbon award this year.

Free entertainment will be Biloxi Bounce House, Games 2 U, Laser Tag, Bowman’s Tennis, face painting, Balloon Man, dancing, and Mickey and Minnie. Educational exhibits will be staged by Home Depot, the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, the Biloxi Fire Department and the Biloxi Police Department's canine unit.
