Biloxi Envirothon team shines in area competition

Biloxi High School's Envirothon Team A had the highest score in the "Current Issue -- Estuaries" category in the South Area Competition at Vancleave City Park in Vancleave.

The team members for the 2010-2011 team included seniors Katie Gilbert and Taylor Manser; junior Brandon Marin; sophomores Jackie Billeaud, Kris-Ann Hutton, Angelina Papale, Aaron Stoeger, Devin Stoeger, Matthew Marin, Sarah Solomon; and freshman Karina Ledezma.

The team, which underwent intense training before the area competition on March 31, is coached and sponsored by Sarah Langford with co-coaching from Neketia Holloway, Jennifer Fortenberry, and Rachel Herrmann.

The Mississippi Envirothon, a program of the Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts, is a hands-on natural resource competition designed to challenge students in Grades 9 through 12 to explore the natural world around them. The program tests their knowledge in the categories of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and current issues.

"Envirothon is an excellent program for high school students," said Gilbert, one of the seniors on the team. "We are tested on our knowledge of the environment, but also get the chance to check out some vocational interests and have fun at the same time."

Through local soil and water conservation districts, volunteers and resource personnel from state and federal natural resource agencies and organizations have been working with educators and sharing their environmental expertise to ready the teams for this competition. These resource professionals were on hand to assist with testing and judging at the area competition, and will be assisting with the statewide competition as well.

The MS Envirothon is funded through grants form the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and Chevron.
