Indians to face Greyhounds for second time this week
3/18/2011

By Justin Sutton

The Biloxi Indians baseball squad will host the Ocean Springs Greyhounds this evening, the second time this week the teams have met.

On Tuesday, Biloxi took advantage of a big sixth inning and a 15 strike out performance by Hawtin Buchanan to defeat Ocean Springs 9-0 in a District 7-6A match up at Ocean Springs.

The Indians took a quick lead in the first inning using a Cody Brown lead off single and a walk by Jordan Mata to score the game’s opening runs. Brown scored on a ground out by Buchanan, and Jordan Skog drove Mata in with a single.

Buchanan struck out the first two hitters he faced in the first before getting Brandon Tash to ground out. In the second inning, Buchanan struck out the side. Buchanan scored the third run for the Indians when he was driven in by Derek Whitfield. Shaun Bartosik picked up the first hit for the Greyhounds with two outs in the third, but he was picked off at first to end the inning.

The Indians went down in order in the top of the fourth, but Buchanan kept the Greyhounds quiet, again fanning the side in the bottom of the fourth.

Brown led off the top of the fifth with a double, and after he stole third, Craig Wilson scored him with a sacrifice fly to push the Biloxi lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Tyler Giles picked up the only other hit for Ocean Springs, but he was left stranded as the Greyhounds were not able to bring him across the plate.

The Indians put the game away with a pair of RBI doubles by Buchanan and Nick Wheelock in the sixth inning. Mata scored Wheelock with an RBI double as well.

Buchanan retired six straight in the sixth and seventh to go the distance for the victory.
