What is Air Force JROTC?
AF JROTC is an elective course at Biloxi High School open to all students. It is a blend of science, social science, technical course work, training and ceremonies, and the elements of leadership. This course is divided into two areas; Aerospace Science and Leadership Education. The Aerospace Science (AS) part provides an introduction to the historical, scientific and technical aspects of aerospace. The Leadership Education (LE) portion provides experiences to develop discipline, responsibility, communication skills and citizenship. Being in the JROTC program does not commit you to military service.
Who teaches the AF JROTC course?
AF JROTC has three teachers; Lt Col Joseph P. Nastasi, SMSgt David C. Butler, and MSgt Kenneth J. Melton. Lt Col Nastasi, SMSgt Butler, and MSgt Melton have a combined total of over 71 years in the Air Force. Lt Col Nastasi's past assignments include Helicopter Test Project Pilot, Combat Rescue Pilot, and Training and Education. SMSgt Butler's experience includes assignments as Instructor, Aerospace Ground Equipment and Professional Military Education. MSgt Melton's past experience includes assignments in Administration, Security Forces, and Intelligence. All three instructors are retired from active duty.
What is the goal of AF JROTC?
AF JROTC acquaints students with the history of aviation and today's aerospace age. It helps develop better informed citizens and promotes an understanding of traits that will help students become more productive after graduation in their chosen field. This course strengthens character, builds leadership skills, and offers a unique environment adding a dimension to the overall educational process.

Credits: Elective credits; Summer Leadership School and ground school 1/2 elective credit
Costs: $30 activity fee. All uniforms, textbooks, etc., are provided to students - no charge.
Obligation: None. There is NO military obligation whatsoever.
Qualifications: To be eligible for membership and continue in the AF JROTC program each student must be:
- In a grade above the 8th - for Biloxi High School; 10th - 12th
- A citizen or national of the United States or an alien admitted for permanent residence.
- Enrolled in or attending a regular course of instruction at Biloxi High School.
- Selected by the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor in coordination with the principal or a designated representative to ensure enrolled students meet acceptable standards; special needs and handicapped students may participate, however while AFJROTC instills self-discipline, it is not to be used as a remedy for chronic student disciplinary problems.
Background courses needed: None. The AF JROTC program is open to all students that meet the above criteria . The Cadet Corps comprises college-bound, general course of study, and vocational students.
Benefits: A student who completes at least two credits of the AF JROTC course (example; ASI and ASII), may be eligible for the following;
- Full four-year, three-year, or two-year college scholarships
- US Air Force Academy nominations
- Upon enlistment in the military, advancement to the grade of E2 for completion of two years in the AF JROTC program, and upon the discretion of the Military Department, may be granted E3 for completion of three years.
About AF JROTC Cadet Group MS-781
Air Force JROTC Cadet Group MS-781 was established in January of 1979 at Biloxi High School. Since that time, MS-781 has developed into an exciting course for the students at BHS. Field trips to Pensacola Naval Air Station; Battleship Alabama; along with C-130 aircraft flights, parades, color guard activities, and visits to Keesler AFB are examples of activities enjoyed by the cadets. Squadron are commanded by a cadet squadron commander, He/She has a staff of cadet officers and cadet enlisted personnel to assist in managing and leading each class. Each class is called a "Flight" and there is always friendly competition between the flights for the semester award of "Outstanding Flight". The cadets in MS-781 have taken on the responsibility of running the day-today activities of the cadet corps. Each flight has assigned to it a flight commander, a flight sergeant, and element leaders. In addition to flight leadership positions, MS-781 has positions in logistics, personnel, public affairs and other areas designed to instill responsibility and teamwork. The class meets every day in room 300.
